Good golly, it’s been B U S Y!
Here are the things I figured out this week:
- Just how amazing change is for your heart and soul and mind. I think it’s so so so easy to just get stuck in your routine and not work on changing and improving yourself – and lots of people know this. But I think there’s another level to this – and it’s the misconception that if you’re busy and relatively happy every day then you don’t need to change anything. These changes can often be the trickiest, but the most necessary. I slowly realised that just because I was relatively busy in my old job, and I was happy to do it on a day-to-day basis, then I was obviously fine. But I was ignoring the fact that I hadn’t felt challenged, nor had I learned anything new, in months. And thank goodness I realised this. There is no doubt in my mind that I will be busy and challenged and learn new things every.single.day of my new job. Cheers to THAT!
- How to light a fire. I’m not going to lie – fires actually scare me a bit. I hate opening the door to our fire and feeling the heat and thinking about how damaging and unpredictable those hot licks of flame can be. But it is disturbingly cold in Auckland at the moment and I had no choice but to suck it up and learn something that humans have been doing for millennia. And. Shit. I’m actually pretty damn good at it! It’s an art, I tell ya, but I’ve done pretty well!
- How annoyingly expensive things are in New Zealand. More companies need to do what Dermalogica did a few months ago and drop their prices to be more closely aligned with international prices. Otherwise we’ll just have to keep buying online from overseas suppliers. And you know what? I hate doing that. I don’t want to do it. I want to support local New Zealand businesses and stores. So many beautiful New Zealand independent bookstores have closed down in the last few years because they can’t compete with Book Depository and Amazon – I don’t want this to keep happening, but do we even have a choice as consumers? I’ve never bought my favourite mascara from New Zealand because I fell in love with it when I was living in Canada and manage to always stock up when I’m in Australia or North America. I’ve also never paid more than $5-$9 USD for it at WalMart. Yet here it is for FOUR TIMES that amount in K-Mart in Auckland. Criminal. The $NZD isn’t that bad. It hasn’t been bad for years. We shouldn’t have to put up with this.
- Rant Over
- Right now it’s Sunday afternoon and the fire is cranking (yeahaah it is!) and I’m about to start doing some work so I’m better prepared for tomorrow. And I’m happy to do this. Get a job you love, friends, and you’ll never see working on Sunday as a chore.
